Discover: Journalists Actually Utilize Your Social Media Accounts

Have you noticed that press kits are no longer needed nowadays? Blame social media for this.

Google and Apple can attest to that. The two big companies do not usually give away press releases, except on super special occasions.

People from the Press doing extensive research about a company report do not always rely on press materials provided by the company. They scrutinize and dig on what has been posted on the social media accounts of the company.

Thus, you need to have be present on social media:

a.  Official blog of the company- Blogs are more entertaining and informational, giving the company a better avenue to point out things. Blogs offer more space for the company to discuss what has been written in press releases.

b. Official social media accounts of the company including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, Instagram, etc.- Pictures taken during important company events are posted on social media pages. Number of comments and shares as engaged with netizens could create great  headlines. Remember when journalists say a photo has gone VIRAL because it is either great or annoying?

c.  Official blog or social media accounts of the chief executive of the company- Personal insights of CEO's are more often not published on the official website of a company. These are published on the blog or social media pages of the chief executive. When CEO's feel bad about a new company policy, their pages are always reflective of that. Thus, journalists know where to get hints for their next article.

d.  Social media sites of people working for the company- People show what is happening inside using their personal accounts. They do this accidentally and incidentally. In fact, they are called, "reliable sources" by news producers.

e.    Social media sites are a good avenue for the company to answer questions from journalists. Journalist can send tweets to the company's official Twitter account, and get answers afterwards.

Journalists get more interesting stories from the personal accounts of people associated with the company than the company's official website, which obviously obtain safe and branded messages.

Lastly, did you know that gossips and other news-worthy stories start with the people of the company before the company confirms it?
